Welcome to the world Kai-La Barrett Britton

Latest addition to the Braid clan

On the morning of August 3rd Jenny, her husband and mother went off to Reston hospital to deliver her baby. Chrissy and I followed a few hours later and waited in anticipation outside the delivery room to hear the news. After a fast labour (water broke at 9:30am and baby arrived at 12:09pm) we could hear the cries of the newborn and someone exclaim "it's a girl!!". Yay for me as I was the only one who predicted it would be a girl :) The rest of the day and the next few to follow were mainly spent at the hospital visiting with baby Kai and her parents. I'm so happy that she was a little stubborn and waited for me to arrive in Reston before gracing us with her prescence. It really an amazing thing to witness - seeing a baby come into this world and watch her change by the hour :)

I went a little trigger happy over the past 4 days, taking almost 300 pictures of Kia. Here are a few of my favorites!

Weddings and Babies

Final days in Nova Scotia & arrival in Virginia

This morning my parents drove me to the Halifax International Airport where they sent me off on my big journey. Although my time at home flew by it was a wonderful two and a half weeks. I got to see many friends and family, including my cousin Jamie's newest addition to the family - a son named Lee Robin :) I also stood in my childhood best friend's wedding. Thursday July 21 was the rehearsal party. It was planned to take place outside but got moved into a garage due to rain. That didn't damper anyones spirits though. It turned into a real Nova Scotian party complete with fiddling and guitar entertainment. The next day the bridal party and a bunch of guests went out on some lobster boats. I tried my hand at fishing and caught a flatfish and 5 mackerel! The wedding of Melissa-Anne to Trevor followed on Saturday. The weather cooperated and the scheduled rain disappeared. It was a beautiful ceremony and awesome reception!!! The last few days at home I spent running around doing errands and packing but I did manage to head to Cape Breton for a day to enjoy the Berthiaumes bunaglow at Middle Cape. Now I sit in my cousin Jenny's living room in Reston Virginia. Her and her husband Erik are expecting their first baby any day now. The baby was due on July 24 so we are hoping he/she arrives naturally soon!! I brought Jenny some Wheel Pizza from home in hopes that eating it will induce labor :P

Below are a few pictures taken over the last 10 days:

Farewell Calgary, Hello Nova Scotia

My going away party was a success and the last few weeks in Calgary flew by! I took in one last Stampeders game on Canada Day and partied my cowboy boots off during the first weekend of Stampede. YEHAW!!! Thanks to those who came out and partied with me :D

I left Calgary on the morning of Tuesday July 12 and stopped in Toronto for 2 days to see my sister Marian. We went to Canada's Wonderland on Wednesday and I had a blast! I love roller-coasters and the last time I was at Wonderland was 12 years ago. The crowds weren't too bad. Our average wait time for rides was 30 mins and I was able to hit up every ride I wanted at least once. About an hour before the park was closing we headed to Dragon Fire, a ride located in one of the park's corners. When we went on it earlier in the day we only waited 5 minutes. When we got to the ride this time there was no line-up! SCORE! After the ride was over there was still no line up so we got to ride the ride 6 times in a row!!

On Thursday July 14 I was scheduled to depart Pearson International Airport at 4:35pm. Everything was on schedule and I boarded the plane at the usual time. Just as I was getting settled I heard a flight attendant announce that everyone was on board and we would be departing shortly. Two minutes later I hear the Captain voice and he informs us there's a mechanical malfunction with the landing gear and the airplane needs to be taken to the hanger for repairs so we have to unload. Off we get and I take a seat near the customer service agent so I can hear what's going on. Many of the passengers on my flight are in line at the counter trying to get on other flights. I consider this option but then hear that my bags won't go with me so I change my mind since Antigonish is 2 hrs from the airport. They reschedule our flight for 7:20pm. Great, 3 hours to kill. Then I look to my right and see a familiar face, Vanessa, someone I worked with at Dakota Bar and Grill on Stephen Ave in Calgary some 4 years ago! I walk up to her and say hi. We went to grab a bite and the 3 hours flew by. The flight didn't end up leaving until 8pm, landing in Halifax at 11pm, so I didn't get back to Antigonish until about 1:30am. My first stop was the Wheel for the best Pizza you can find and it sure hit the spot!

I've been here at home in Antigonish since then. The weather has not been the summer weather I'm used to. Friday felt like fall. It was about 12 degrees and rainy. I went for a walk on the beach with my mom and I had to wear a tank top, t-shirt, sweater and raincoat just to stay warm. Saturday was rainy but the skies cleared late in the afternoon. We had Melissa's Antigonish Stagette Saturday and it was a great success. Sunday we finally had beautiful weather. Sunny skies and temperatures in the high 20s. I spent the day at the beach - the perfect Sunday :)

I am starting to get excited and nervous for my big adventure, but for now I'm just trying to enjoy the time I have left with my family and friends.

Departure t-2.5 weeks

Booking Hostels and more planning

Hopefully you found your way from my old blog site to this one. Thanks for joining me!

I can't believe how fast time flies. I only have 4 days of work left and 16 days left in Calgary!!!

I started booking hostels in Costa Rica and Argentina. If you've been to Costa Rica and can recommend some good hostels (or ones to avoid) please let me know! I'm also trying to plot my travel route through South East Asia, particularly Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. If you've travelled to any of theses countries and can share your favorite spots that would be awesome!

Tonight is my going away party. It Hawaiian themed and bound to be a blast!! Hopefully the rain will cooperate and stay away.

That's all for now! Til next time :)
